South Americans have graffiti on lock. No bullshit, just action.

Liquor

Despite overzealous restrictions placed on the sale and consumption of alcohol it still manages be the source of extensive violence and social disfunction.

We pack thirsty patrons into restricted areas and feed them booze like they are some kind of farm animals. Once these cash cows have been milked for 5-8 hours (greatly assisted by taxing designed to encourage social responisibilty) we set them free to vomit, fight and sexually assault each other.

Rather than allow alcohol to be enjoyed in unrestricted social situations, such as a bbq in a public park, our goverment believes that it is much more sensible policy to  exclusively encourage consumption in venues that muffle any kind of normal social interaction where patrons are supervised thereby voiding any responsibility they might have for themselves.

In reality we are too far gone. We pretent we are a nation of proud beer drinkers. Really, we are a nation of clueless drunks. Who would have thought that sharing a tallie would allow two people to enjoy cold beer? Instead we would rather force half a litre of warm soup down our necks.

Thats all beside the point, because come Friday I will be punishing myself in 2 hours of cut priced fury like every other sucker.

So drawing to the end of another decade we see another terrorist slip through the cracks and attempt to bring down another plane. Luckily the incident was easily controlled, but it served as a reminder of the everpresent ’potential possibility’ of a terrorist attack.

The power in the world is bolstered by the fact that a series of predictable reactions underpin the way that we as humans participate and interact within society.

Currently in Brisbane public transport fares have risen by 40% in an effort to encourage people to buy ‘Go Cards’, a device used in conjunction with a new electronic ticketing scheme. Paper tickets until now and by Queensland Rail’s own admission, were a far more cost effective way to access public transport than the new ‘Go Card’.

The Queensland goverment clearly sees the ‘Go Card’ as what is best for the people. Alas as our goverment operates on the platform of democracy where they still need to give people the power of ‘choice’. People are still able to make the decision to use the old paper tickets, but now at a fourty percent premium. So if as a society we are operating under the belief that we are in the grip of somewhat of an ‘economic crisis’ at fourty percent more a paper ticket is seemingly not a viable option.

We are all so caught up in this world of excess consumption where wants are confused with needs, that we allow the goverment to proceed with action so abhorent to the safety net of democracy that we all seem to hold so dearly as the supreme proctector of our basic rights as human beings. How can choice be so blatantly tainted with such a conflict of interest and be accepted by the people?

In the case of the recent terrorist attack aboard a US flight how is it that in a country with such a focus on national secuity did a foriegn national supposedly on a CIA watchlist slip though the net? Is it entirely possible that the whole occurance was a result of a calculated decision by the US goverment in order to evoke a predictable series of feelings and reactions by the people.

Say if the US government wanted to further bolster their national security agenda and justify further action under their ‘war on terror’ letting someone ‘slip’ through would be in itself just enough for people to once again doubt their personal safety.

When an incident like this occurs there is a predictable expectation amongst society for the goverment to take action and do what is best for the people. In this case Obama and various global administrations will lead the charge to bolster the war on terror, further restrict civil liberties and implement tighter measures of control.

I am not suggesting that the US goverment orchestrated terrorist attacks, I am just asserting that it is possible that they are able to conciously capitalise on these incidents to help push support for their legislative agendas. The fact is whether good or bad all these incidents of terrorism serve as platforms for action.

At the end of the day everything that has been written about here is complete bullshit. All we can do is try an not get caught up in this series of predictable reactions. The limit of all this can only go so far as encouraging people to think about how they want to act and not to simply react.

It has really pissed me off that the goverment has supreme confidence that we have become a society of retarted invalids incapable of independent thought.

It is very convinient and fortunate for governments that we seem to have forgotten one of the key ingredients of democracy, independent thought. We are more than happy to trade off our civil liberties in the interests of  the goverment keeping us safe. We seem to be above the concept of communism, something so decidedly ‘bad’ in the western world, yet there seem to be still so many bridges to it.

There are all sorts of anarchist movements, protests, conspiracy theories and other forms of resistance but at the end of the day you hold the power to think before you act or react.
